The movie and the book is based on old Persian Mythology, Sang-e Sabour سنگ صبور, a magic stone that one an talk to all their secrets and hardship. Once all is told, the stone explodes, as if the burden of the person has been transferred to it and the person is relived of their depressed state.[3][4] The story happens somewhere, in war-torn Afghanistan, and is about a young woman in her thirties who watches over her older husband in a decrepit room. He is reduced to a vegetative state because of a bullet in the neck. Not only is he abandoned by his companions in Jihad (one of whom has shot him during an argument), but also by his brothers.
Her husband has unconsciously become syngué sabour (THE PATIENCE STONE) - a magical black stone that, according to Persian mythology, absorbs the plight of those who confide in it. The woman's confessions are extraordinary and without restraint: about sex and love, her anger against a man who never understood her, who mistreated her, who never showed her any respect or kindness.Through the words she delivers so audaciously to her husband, the woman seeks to free herself from suffering. But after weeks of looking after him, she begins to act, discovering herself in the relationship she starts with a young soldier.

While the wartime setting in THE PATIENCE STONE is never explicitly stated as Afghanistan, "It is clearly Kabul," says producer Michael Gentile. "The conflict doesn't have to be named. There's a universality to the story, and the folklore of the "patience stone"- syngué sabour-is known throughout the Muslim world."
Describing the metaphor that anchors his story, Rahimi explains, "Everybody knows songs and stories about the syngué sabour. In very closed societies with so much censorship and prohibition, it symbolizes a common yearning to pour out feelings and desires that are kept locked away." When the heroine dares to speak frankly to her paralyzed husband, he becomes her patience stone, absorbing her cares and secrets and enabling her self-discovery. "Shame about the human body is one of the fundamental forms of oppression," says Rahimi, "And she learns about her own body."
The book's central idea is the myth of Syngué Sabour, the patience stone, a stone on which you can shed your misfortunes, your complaints, your secrets until it's so full it bursts. In this story, the stone is the husband, a warrior paralysed by a bullet in the neck. The woman, to bring him back to life, has to pray from morning till night for 99 days. But that prayer soon turns into confession. She murmurs into his ear all the things she has kept locked inside her for so many years.

This movie is about religious philosophy. If you are not into religious philosophy or seeing the raw sexuality of Milla Jovovich then go elsewhere. The movie asks questions about the seemingly contradiction of free will vs. God's will. If God has a master plan, then aren't our wrong doings part of it? If so, should we regret our sins?In what appears to be a role reversal De Niro places a parole officer and Edward Norton a prisoner. Early on we find out that De Niro has some anger management problems. As a child he hit his brother in the head with a hammer and threatened to kill his daughter if his wife left him. He is the parole officer who judges people.Norton plays a convict who started a fire to cover up a crime committed by his cousin. His nickname is "Stone." Stone, according to the new religion of Norton is the beginning phase of a soul. We all start out as stones and work our way up to humans as part of the eternal process. His simple questions and answers cause De Niro to think and examine his own life and religious belief.Milla's religious views come out late in the movie, and they too have an effect on De Niro. Much of the movie consists of various conversations with very little action. The background radio chatter of a religion station sets the mood. If you know how to listen, God will talk to you. Sex, nudity, f-bomb and a few other expletives that surprised me.Milla is extremely sensual in this film: Her eyes, raised eyebrow, lips, smile, mannerisms, nudity, and especially her whispers.
"I don't remember the name of the movie (maybe the masters, Siskel and Ebert, remember) but I do remember that the main actor was Peter Fonda. I remember the plot clearly. It was about a group of brilliant Harvard students who raped a woman. She accused them in a public hearing and they responded that she was a prostitute. Their lawyer defended them by using their grades and good families. They're found innocent. The woman commits suicide. As adults, the 'juniors' look for stronger emotions and they dedicate themselves to hunting down vacationing couples on weekends... after the standard rape, the 'juniors' free the couple in the countryside and hunt them down with shotguns.
