The Andean puma (Puma concolor) has not been widely studied, particularly in reference to its semen characteristics. The aim of the present study was to define the morphometry of puma sperm heads and classify their subpopulations by cluster analysis. Samples were recovered postmortem from two epididymides from one animal and prepared for morphological observation after staining with the Hemacolor kit. Morphometric data were obtained from 581 spermatozoa using a CASA-Morph system, rendering 13 morphometric parameters. The principal component (PC) analysis was performed followed by cluster analysis for the establishment of subpopulations. Two PC components were obtained, the first related to size and the second to shape. Three subpopulations were observed, corresponding to elongated and intermediate-size sperm heads and acrosomes, to large heads with large acrosomes, and to small heads with short acrosomes. In conclusion, puma spermatozoa showed no uniform sperm morphology but three clear subpopulations. These results should be used for future work in the establishment of an adequate germplasm bank of this species.
Late potentials are electrical signals occurring after the terminal portion of a conventionally recorded QRS complex and extending into the ST segment. In acutely ischemic animal preparations, following left anterior descending coronary artery occlusion, these signals were initially recorded in the ischemic epicardial zone and not in the normal tissue by Han et al.1. Several investigators observed these late potentials at various intervals following coronary artery ligation and in animal models where the ligation was subsequently released2,3. These earlier studies also showed that there was an association between late potentials and spontaneous ventricular tachyarrhythmias2, 4. Subsequently, the characteristics and pathophysiology of these late potentials have undergone intense investigation. In this chapter, the objective will be to describe (i) the experimental observations of late potentials, (ii) their pathophysiology in acute ischemia, subacute and chronic infarction models, (iii) the role of anisotropy and repolarization abnormalities in late potential recordings, (iv) the clinical pathophysiology of late potentials and finally (v) the link between direct and surface recordings.
